DMFW Progress Report

Every passing hour brings the Solar System forty-three thousand miles closer to Globular Cluster M13 in Hercules — and still there are some misfits who insist that there is no such thing as progress.

I live and work in the UK in a city called Southend-On-Sea which is about forty miles from London, downriver on the Thames where it meets the ocean.

Interests & Hobbies

I'm a long time Shrimper (a supporter of Southend United football team). I enjoy software development for work and recreation. I have long standing interests in astronomy, maths and the history and philosophy of science, and I am an active member of a book club and enjoy a wide variety of literature of many types. I'm also a long distance walker, although I don't do as much of that as I used to these days (just the one annual three day mission).

Favorite Movies

I gravitate towards science fiction in books and films and I enjoy pretty much all of the genre standards (2001, Alien(s), Star Wars (original trilogy), Star Trek, Blade Runner, Dune etc...), but I'm not particularly a fan of the relatively recent explosion of Marvel superhero and comic book inspired films which are just not my thing.   Apart from science fiction I have an open mind but I haven't watched as much as I perhaps should have from "classic" cinema. I've started attending a kind of weekly film club recently and this is filling in my education very slowly.

Favorite TV Series

Breaking Bad. Game of Thrones. Stranger Things. Fallout. White Lotus.

Favorite Books

Klara and the Sun, Norwegian Wood, Gormenghast, Our Friends from Frolix 8, In Viriconium, Perdido Street Station, Lord of the Rings, Handmaid's Tale, The Earthsea Books, The Fountains of Paradise, Jagged Orbit, Pixel Juice, Bleak House, War and Peace, Consider Phlebas, The Martian Chronicles, Dune (the Frank Herbert originals) & far too many others to mention.

Favorite Writers

Kazuo Ishiguro, Haruki Murakami, Mervyn Peake, Philip K Dick, M. John Harrison, China Mieville, J.R.R. Tolkien, Margaret Attwood, Ursula K. le Guin, Arthur C Clarke, John Brunner, Jeff Noon, Charles Dickens, Tolstoy, Iain M. Banks, Ray Bradbury & too many others to mention...

Favorite Games

Computer Fallout III, Skyrim, Half Life, Elite Dangerous.
PS5 Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghosts of Tsushima and Yotei & Fallout IV are my favourite open world games and I also do play some Helldivers.
Board Chess when I can find a face to face opponent but mostly online. My profile is DMFW on chess.com if you want a game there. I like playing other board games when I get a chance.
