Story 10: The Door

Rawon is not so bad of an apprentice, Sky finds. For the rest of the day Rawon helped file paperwork and find excerpts from testimonies and witness statements. Sky, however, knows that being a legal apprentice includes experiences of being in court and interviews as well - something that they are not doing at the moment. Their court case is coming up and Sky wonders if they should spend some time outside work practicing with Rawon.

Sky is still a little bit skeptical about Rawon’s sudden appearance in the law firm. Maybe they should play it safe and invite Aero to help as well, he has been the one doing the court sessions lately so he would have it fresh in his mind. Sky’s gaze wandered to where Aero is sitting and made up their mind; they made their way to him.

Aero deep in thought senses a familiar presence and looks up.

“Hey, Aero, can I have a minute?” Sky asks, gesturing at the door.

Rawon finishes with the current set of paperwork and goes to ask Sky what's next when he spots them walking with Aero to the door. He tilts his head and follows them out of curiosity, standing behind the door.

Suddenly Rawon feels an intensive presence next to him and now distracted from eavesdropping Sky turns to see the menacing Sarah glaring down at him.

“I was thinking that Rawon will need some court experience before our court case soon,” Sky said to Aero, unaware of the presence of the fellow Special at the other side of the door.

“What are you doing lurking by the door? Waiting for someone or up to something?” Sarah intensely inquires of Rawon.

Aero, equally unaware, nods, “I think giving him more briefing to make sure he’s fully prepared is a good idea too, Sky.”

“I was considering whether to get coffee from downstairs or the break room” Rawon wittingly replies.

“Would it be okay if I ask for your help to meet with him outside of work hours sometimes in the next couple of days?” Sky inquires.

“And what have you decided?” Sarah continues to interrogate Rawon, who by now is visibly annoyed at missing out on whatever conversation is occurring on the other side of the door.

Aero’s face lit up and he smiles, “Of course, Sky, I’d be happy to.”

“Umm…” Rawon mutters thinking of a snarky response when suddenly the door swings open catching him in the face.

Sky stares down at Rawon on the floor in question, as he scrambles to get up and hand Sky his finished work, Sarah shaking her head in the background.

“Are you ok?” Aero asks concernedly.

“Yeah, yeah,” Rawon nods, half brushing him off.

Aero looks to Sky wondering if they’ll ask Rawon or Aero should bring it up. Sky stares back at him, smiling and shrugging, gesturing at Rawon who’s staring at the two of them in question. Sarah too is awkwardly watching this exchange of glances.

“Do you want to grab dinner with Aero and I after work today, Rawon?” Sky smiles.

Rawon is once more taken off guard and falls back to the floor. Sky grins, thinking that no matter how much of a cool at Rawon put on, at the end he’s still the same clumsy mess they knew. “I’ll take that as a yes. See you there”, as Sky finishes, the end of work day bell rings and the door slams into Rawon’s face once more as people rush home for the weekend.
