Make home admin page 'default to desktop' not 'athena'

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Nothing missing, its just the choice that when you access the root domain it redirects to https://www.worldanvil.com/p/athena rather than https://www.worldanvil.com/p/desktop. It would be good to default to the latter - especially on mobile, but would also be better on desktop.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Currently it defaults top opening the overlay to edit the homepage. On desktop its just one click to close, but on mobile its two clicks. Every time i start with worldanvil it opens on edit mode for the homepage, which i edit very rarelt. My first action every single time, is to close it so i can get to the desktop view which has the continue working content and is much kore regularly useful.   Its actually worse on mobile, becauew it needs two clicks to close the athena default and the left menu with a couple of time consuming animations/transitions beofreni can get to what i feel is a much better launchpad.

What are other uses for this feature request?

none really, its just an annoying time consuming default that has no value for me... i spend my first few seconds every time i access worldanvil getting rid of a view i only need to acces qrelatively rarely.

Follow up

For me the easiest work-around is just bookmarking the desktop URL in my browser and using that as my 'home' button, but its a hard habit to break just clicking the Worldanvil logo in the header. It doesn't help the mobile experience though, which is the more annoying part tbh, so maybe that specific behaviour could be differentiated from the desktop behaviour. Also, to Sneaky Hobbit's point... the article list in athena defaults to alpha sorting, so need to then select 'latest'... so whichever way, its a couple of clicks to get to get to picking up where i left off. Anyway - its all pretty low-level stuff tbh. Totally understand finding the balance with so many users with different preferences means changing anything will impact a lot of people and can easily become a game of whack-a-mole. It can't be easy to find the balance and prioritise things as they get attended to and released.
Its reverted back to Athena with a recent deployment

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! With the release of the new desktop/world dashboard, the behavior was changed to load the desktop by default some time ago (sorry it took us a bit to get to this suggestion).

Defaulting to an edit page is definitely the wrong choice. Set it to desktop. Editing should always be something you select to do.

I agree with having the choice on this matter as people have different preferences.

Yeah, I don't edit my homepage very often, and I really don't think it needs to be the first thing you see when you open the site. It makes more sense for it to be the actual desktop homepage, which is a better starting point to either start working on your world or engage with community stuff. Also because with the notifications, news and community tabs, this is the page that updates most regularly and makes most sense to be the starting check-in point on logging in. I also immediately close the athena page first thing on logging in. It's not world ending, sure, but it is kind of annoying.

I have expressed my frustrations with every single person being forced into the new (still broken) interface upon login already in november. I have been promised a more reader-friendly solution in the development discussion back then. It is the end of february. Worldanvil continues to be a hostile environment to everyone who wishes to use any of the other features of this website. I pay to be able to access and work with many of these features - yet I have to jump through hoops and workarounds every single time I want to create something here. It is INCREDIBLY frustrating. And I speak as someone who has loved it here for years. On top of it, this new athena being the DEFAULT thing you see is incredibly off putting for readers and players (= not active worldbuilders). As a sage, it severely limits the ability to be able to build your fanbase here as most people have no reason to put up with it and just leave.   I don't care if it will be desktop, what version of the desktop it will be or if it ends up being any other place. Stop forcing everyone to use half-baked half-tested features upon log in.

It's a tricky one. Only a custom view is going to please everyone. But I do agree that an edit view over the world's homepage is the least likely thing I'll be doing and since a lot of my articles are now buried quite deeply in a category and article tree structure, that's rarely the best way for me to find what I want to work on either. Having the "most recently used" list front and centre of the desktop would be my preference and if that speeded up loading it's another bonus...

...For people worried about accidentally editing the homepage, or otherwise upset about the homepage edit being the first to open, you do realize you can scroll down in Athena and select something else to edit from your content tree there, right? You don't need to rely on the Desktop for that (if you want to, that's one thing, it's just not an actual necessity).   The stuff about notifications still holds, though. I myself would at least like if the article manager didn't obscure the notifications.

Can the devs finally admit they dun f***ed up and LISTEN to the people actually USING their platform? I've run out of fingers counting on both hands how many threads that gain momentum get swatted down by a singular a**mad individual for absurd reasons and with a callousness that belies rationale. If this is supposedly the consensus of "the team", then who is the "I" that keeps making all the decisions? Who is the "I"?!

From what I recall, others complained that they didn't like the Desktop and would rather see their article list upon logging in. Athena was made the interim default until the Desktop is fully implemented and customizable, at which point the Desktop would become the default. Some were quite vitriolic in their hatred of its current state.

Yeah that. How often do you edit the homepage? 3 times a year? I always fear that I accidentally delete stuff on the homepage. I'd rather have the homepage LOCKED away somewhere. Seeing the desktop with the current statistics and the number of notifications is way more helpful.

Yes! I always close my world editor first thing when I arrive on site, and I always fear I might accidentally edit something on that menu before I manage to close it. Desktop first!

Agreed! I always close the Athena menu to look at the desktop to check notifications and the community stream before doing anything. It does feel a lot more clunky on mobile as it pulls up the keyboard at the same time without any input on the user side
