Add Article Foreword content section to all article templates

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Sometimes you want to give readers information before they get to the main article, like content warnings, introductions, or suggested prior reading. Right now, we have a full-width footer that goes below the default vignette & sidebar, but no full-width header to go above those sections. The Credits section can be used instead, but it can get tricky if you want to use it as an actual Credits section and article foreword.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Adding an article foreword content section to all templates will give people the option to include vital introductory information without hijacking the Credits section. If the writer has no interest in using it, they can simply leave it blank to no detriment, same as all other fields. Since it's only adding a field, not changing or removing anything existing, it shouldn't have an impact on existing articles.

What are other uses for this feature request?

  • Article intros/summaries
  • Content warnings
  • Recommended prior reading
  • Vital context
  • Estimated reading times
  • Status information (such as WIP)
  • Example of usage
  • The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! We've added this to our backlog to be implemented.

I use a container above my text for a tl;dr version of that page, which can achieve a similar effect - https://thebroadcloth.com/a/quick-start-online-article   But it would be good to have an easier way to do this, especially for content warnings.

Great idea. I've also missed the option to add things at the top.

Good idea. I could have used this on several articles I've written recently.

Love the idea of a full-width header. Currently you have to use a workaround to achieve it, but it seems like a lot of people would use this -- myself included.

I tend to just add a paragraph at the very top of the free-writing section, but this could be really useful if it's simple to implement!

Not totally against this, but couldn't you just... add a foreword in the vignette/free text section?

I've personally been using the credits section but I suppose it doesn't hurt to add more sections. I am uncertain how easy it is to implement, though. Nevertheless, thanks for suggesting. God bless.

I would use this so much! I've experimented with using the credits and the subheading for content warnings and authors notes (ones with information that's best taken in before you read), and neither have been working well for this.

Having just come across this in my own articles, absolutely yes. They would be extremely useful as an additional layout option.
