relationship relationship-editor family family-tree sibling siblings parent parents
Issue:
Adding relationships for large families is unnecessarily frustrating. Some of the major pain points are:
1) Linking sibling characters together on their individual pages requires the use of the extended relationship editor, even when both characters already share one or two parents.
2) Only one relationship can be added at a time, even if a character has the same base relationship type ("Brother"/"Sister") with multiple siblings.
3) It can be difficult to tell at a glance which family members are missing from a character's relationship page, and the same relationship can be added multiple times as a duplicate entry. Both forces unnecessary checking of family trees and linked character lists for omissions and duplicates.
Solution:
1) List all unassigned, immediate family members in a section of the current character's relationship editing page.
2) Add a "quick-assign relationship" button next to each character in the list to bring up the "new entry" window, with the character slot already filled.
3) Allow the selection of multiple characters in the "new entry" window. Creating the relationship with multiple characters selected would apply the same settings to each, as if the user had created the same entry for each character individually.
Alternatively (or additionally), a new simplified wizard-style tool could be added that would check the character's immediate family tree, and prompt the user to define their relationship with each detected character. Once assigned, the user could edit the new entry as normal to add more detail.
(e.g. prompt the user to define the relationship between: a mother and the father of her son, or a son and his mother's daughter, if none already exists.)
The Team's Response
Thanks for the suggestion! Most of these issues will be addressed in a planned update to the relationships system, so this is accepted! The current system will not be updated, so don't expect this to be implemented until the relationships update.
