share shared cross cross-world
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
Many (most?) of us have more than one World. Sometimes there are things that are useful to have in more than one World. For me, I like to have several house rules that I like to use in more than one campaign setting. For now I manage a Word document that I share with people through One Drive, but there are some very useful features of having the rules usable in a web format. For one thing, linking to a single version of the same articale would be really great for the same reasons that good software tends to be modular (fix it for everything in one place). Also, there is presentation. The options that World Anvil provides to dispaly and organize data are really, really useful.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
It would allow for there to be categories that can be shared by the different Worlds that the owner has. While my personal use is probably going to be house rules, I can think of many other applications like statblocks and mosters, magic items, etc. that could be used in multiple campaign settings. For example, I could have a Rifts setting (World) easily use things from other campaign settings (Worlds).
What are other uses for this feature request?
Any articles or similar content that can be used for more than one campaign setting is valid. I am thinking that it would really be that categories might be the way to go. Something that might be of concern is the privacy for subscribers of the worlds. I guess it would have to be set to allow for users of each of the worlds to be able to see stuff.
Follow up
The Hyperion thing will probably work for what I am asking for. However, but it depends on how that really works. Especially for game system stuff. Can you retroactively connect worlds? Or do you have to know that world X should belong to world Z when you create them?
You do not always know that you will want to reuse something in another world. For example, you might have a fantasy world and then three years later you find out that you want to tie it to another campaign. This sort of thing happens a lot in cross-dimensional settings. It is much easier if you can just point to that world instead of having to re-add the articles. Also, if I want to edit something, it is better if I edit it once and everywhere that looks at it is effectively updated at the same time.
The Team's Response
I am really sorry but this will not happen.
There are already ways to reference content from one world to another.
If you have so much content which is similar, the content should be under the same logical domain (world)
In terms of having a PARENT world with CHILDREN worlds that inherit properties/data from the parent, that will happen, it's already in the pipeline under project Hyperion
To answer the FOLLOW UP questions. No it won't have to be on creation. The chances are that you will be able at any point to set a parent world.
