Sort templates alphabetically on Create a New Article screen

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

On the Create a New Article screen, the tiles to select a template are presented in a certain order (as shown in the screenshot). It takes a moment to find the template I want because the tiles aren't sorted in a logical (to me) order. I would not think to look for "Military" between "Country" and "God/Deity."

It would be quicker and simpler if the templates were sorted alphabetically, so the user doesn't have to scroll through the tiles and hunt for the one they wany.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Alphabetical sorting by template name would allow the user to search for the right template in O(logN) time instead of O(N) time.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This would create an affordance to help the user learn the template names a little faster.

Follow up

Choosing a template is an irreversible decision, and it's harder to make an informed choice among alternatives if the templates are sorted by popularity. I wish we could have a poll to see what proportion of users actually like the current sort order.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! The order of templates is based on which templates are most used by the community, based on our internal stats. Note that you can start typing as soon as you open the template selector and quickly find the template you want (also the first result is always highlighted so you can just press enter to open it).

I second Those2Nerds, most-used templates based on your personal history would be amazing, and alphabetical sorting as an option would be cool!

Alphabetical order would make sense for everyone and make lesser used templates easier to find. For frequent users, they would gain muscle memory to immediately find their most used types, so it would only be annoying to them to change the layout for the first few weeks.

this would make my brain so streamlined, by the time i find the template i need my adhd has all but erased the idea i wanted to make an article for. I make a lot of drafts on the fly so i can link it while i'm writing and not have to track down every published article that mentions that concept later, so having a bit more streamlined article creation would be extremely helpful!

This could be useful for people, as long as it is an optional sorting method

I agree with Those2Nerds. I can understand putting the most frequently used across the entire user-base at the top. But I do often have to search for the ones I'm interested in. An alphabetical or recently used (per user) option would be wonderful.

I believe the current order is most-used site-wide. An alphabetical sort would make common templates like Settlement and Species harder to find than less-used Document and Culture. Having most-used templates at the top makes things easier for most people, most of the time. The Search bar covers everything else.   That said, I'd love to see *optional* sorting methods added, like a-z, most-used in the active World, or most recently used. If you could change your default sort, or WA remembered the last one you used, that'd be real neat.
