I wasn’t sure about it at first, but now I love it. It makes working from my phone infinitely easier and looks so much nicer. I’d be more sympathetic if you’d waited a few weeks before suggesting this. I’d advise that you keep an open mind and spend some time getting used to it. It’s not that complicated, after all. Anyway, I’d much rather see the team work in cooler stuff that would help more people.
I'm extremely sympathetic, because I am also struggling with the new layout, but I think giving feedback on how to make the current layout more easily navigable (and which old-layout features are now missing that you can't live without) is a more feasible path for people having trouble. Asking them to re-implement the old layout would mean either forcing the team to upkeep two separate UIs or keeping a UI available that will lose function as new features are added to only the new Ui.
There is a lot of development effort involved in maintaining old UIs. I would prefer that work to be spent on adjustments to the new UI, new features, etc.
Mostly I see the complaint that new users "aren't familiar with the site" which makes it unfair to ask the team to keep maintaining two UI's in perpetuity - as you use the site, you'll become familiar, just like you did with the old UI or did with any other side. The new layout is fast, clean, and crisp. One valid thing I saw was someone asking for a quicker way to change in-world date/time - that is something separate from this request and could be added back IN if it's something people need and use, not a reason to maintain the old UI alongside the amazing new one.
I don't think the development team should have to spend time on this. Keeping both UIs means that when the team wants to add a feature, they have to implement that feature into both UIs (if that's even feasible). This would make every future feature taken longer to be implemented, which none of us want. Especially when the new UI truly looks so good as a regular user.
I don't think it needs the ability to switch between the layouts, but maybe having the sidebar expandable would be a better option. While working on a smaller screen, or in limited space, the narrow sidebar is great and out of the way but easily accessible, but when working on a larger area, and not being very familiar with WA and the location of various items, it is now inconvenient having to mouse over everything to find what I'm looking for.
I love the new design. I was constantly having to collapse the sidebar to make room for article creation, and then expand it to navigate somewhere, only to re-collapse it once I got to my destination Now I am able to maximize my workspace and navigate with out changing anything. Plus the icons are intuitive and don’t take long to learn. More importantly, maintaining both old and new UI’s would be a programming nightmare. Any new features would need to be added to both menus, which would add more chances to introduce errors, and take up valuable coding and testing time.
I think that this would mean a lot of work on the development team. It would also mean using old and janky code which maybe is not up to actual standards of the team, or they do not want to use anymore.
I use World Anvil primarily to track my Pathfinder game. I loved that I was able to easily pull down a tab to advance the in-world date. That feature seems to be gone, and it is cumbersome to change it now.
While the new UI looks smoother, the old sidebar had descriptions of what each option is - as a fairly new user, I have to hover over them to see what is what, which seems more time consuming.
