image image-resizing
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
The ability to resize images by their width in BBCode is useful, but is only half of what is needed. Setting an image height override instead of an image width override in the img BBCode would be the preferred solution.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
I want to be able to resize images in my articles either by width or by height. In my case, I have a series of articles in my world that describe military ranks, each showing the rank's insignia in the sidebar. All of these images are either square or rectangular with the height being the major axis of the image. See
,
, and
as examples.
I would like to have all these images share a consistent height value to make these rank insignias share similar scale across the articles, but instead of being able to simply set a single height override through their BBCode reference, I will currently have to adjust each image to fit as I'd prefer.
Being able to set both width and height overrides at he same time seems redundant, and I'm assuming that the implementation of the override options in BBCode are pattern matching based given that they don't seem to be required nor are position-specific.
I could see the existing implementation of an integer number on its own still being interpreted as a width to maintain backwards compatibility so not affecting any authors' existing uses, but additional patterns of w=<integer> or width=<integer> and h=<integer> or height=<integer> providing the different options for constraining by width or height respectively.
What are other uses for this feature request?
I think this is a pretty specific feature upgrade, not sure if there is another use for it.

Not sure how I managed to link to the same image twice. The third one should have been this:
The Team's Response
Thanks for the suggestion! We agree that sometimes height is more important than width, and calculating the height based on the current width-based size adjustment isn't easy. We've added this to our list as a low-priority improvement. Note that Grandmasters and above, with access to
custom CSS containers, can already adjust image height if you're willing to dabble in CSS.
