New article type: game rules

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

All the current article types are about Setting. I, however, am currently writing down tabletop rules that go with a setting. Right now, this means that my articles are labelled as Generic.   Not a good way to find them.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

A new type "Rules" or "Ruleset" would make it easier for users to browse for rules vs. setting.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This can be used to let WorldAnvil host rulebooks. If Ruleset were to receive several categories, this could also be divided into RPGs, board games, card games, etc.

Follow up

@DMFW sayeth > One issue I can see is that if you are creating a game system, you probably want to apply it to multiple worlds later, so might need some way to link world content?   I like the idea, but it feels like a followup :)   @Hanhula expanded > I don't see how this would be able to be correctly broken down into article prompts. Rulesets are not standardised.   No, they're not. I don't feel that rulesets need article prompts, but if they do, they could be something along the lines of:
  • "Describe a deadly trap and how a hero could get out of it."
  • "Describe an expedition into a hostile land and the preparations the heroes should take if they are escorting it."
  • "Describe a duel for honor, money or any other motivation and how it gets narrated and rolled, round by round or blow by blow."
  • ...
  • That's for RPGs, of course. And yes, of course, authors may require adapting this, e.g. in the latter case some RPGs don't have dice rolls or rounds. But I feel that's par for the course.
Alright, arguments that this is already feasible by creating custom article templates convinced me.   Trying to find out how to close this feature request.

    The Team's Response

Hey there!   Games are Traditions. There is already a template for that :) If there are prompts that are missing, please do create a suggestion with a list of the suggested missing prompts so we can discuss it and if agreed upon by the community, added.

I don't really see a reason why we need a special template for this. A template is defined by the prompts / input fields it uses, and I don't think there would be a difference between a generic and a rule set template.   If it's just about navigating the world, then a proper category structure and usage of tags will do much more than a new template type.

In addition to the things already mentioned, I would include that there is the possibility to add a custom article template. Just do that and rename it as "Rules". That's exactly what I would do (and do) in that Situation. Having additional article types with something that can be solved that easy is not really a good idea.

You can already do this by using a "Generic Article." I've seen it used on plenty of worlds, especially when worlds don't have similar game mechanics to fill in available fields (prompts). Check out Toblin's CD10 world, for example. He shows a fantastic way to stylize an article to fit game mechanics in.

There already are entire rpg systems on WorldAnvil, and they are managing just fine with the existing templates and Statblocks. Right now I don't see anything in your suggestion that you can't resolve with Categories and Tags.   An article Template is defined by all the available fields (called Prompts) to fill in, and the varying ways they connect. For example, a Character can be linked to their Species, Ethnicity, and secondary Cultures (which again are Ethnicity articles). I can link an Organization as their family, and link them relationwise to other Characters as their family members. I can link their current Location, their affiliated Organizations, their current Vehicle, what current Conditions they are afflicted by.   What I'm missing here is a gameplan: What fields should a Rules article offer? What kind of articles should be linkable to them, and how? What makes it actually need a non-Generic template?

I agree with Hanhula that you can't really have prompts for rules / rulesets. So making an extra template for it makes no sense.   You are a Grandmaster, which means you can just make a custom article template based on the generic template and name it rules or whatever you want and then that name shows up instead of generic.

I understand that not all homebrew systems are the same, so coming up with universal prompts might be difficult to come up with BUT I think this is useful enough that it would be worth the effort.

A Ruleset article type would probably work best with few to no prompts, but I could see a type dropdown being useful for it. Such as being able to select from 'RPG, Board Game, Card Game, LARP, Mixed, Other' or the like. That would be a useful tidbit that would be pretty ubiquitous among game rulesets, I think.

Your thinking of what a game is quite … contrite and specific - this will make a bad template. The tradition template covers all fundamentals of what a game is.   I can tell you right now that expanding the tradition template will be acceptable, but a template most will never use will not.

Call it a "Mechanics" article (so it can be used for code-based game design slightly easier) and you got it!

I don't see how this would be able to be correctly broken down into article prompts. Rulesets are not standardised. Use a category to keep rules together, and write them as generic.

Intriguing idea. I can see how some people making worlds might also like to create their own game systems to go with them rather than simply using them with an existing system. It's all part of the creative impulse. I'm personally more interested in using world building as a spring board for writing but I'm happy to put a few points in the pot for this. One issue I can see is that if you are creating a game system, you probably want to apply it to multiple worlds later, so might need some way to link world content? Also it could be useful to set down some specific ideas for what you'd like in the new template.   To keep your rules together as generic articles, without further changes can you not simply put them under a Rules category at the top level of your world? That should make them easy to find.
