Have maps automatically switch as you move along a timeline.

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

When making a chronical geopolitical changes can occur, wars, nations being founded, civil wars occuring, empires falling ect. To show these things occuring visually the readers will have to manually switch to a different map. It makes it challenging to show the ebb and flow of the boarders of the world, the progress of a war and the rising and expansion of new nations for the chronicle.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

If map switching could be tied to certain events, or dates in the timeline it would make it possible to show how the geopolitcal situation of the world changes with time. The readers could see how the new nations of the world grew and the vaccum a nation falling could create. If one wanted to make a detailed timeline of a war they could use it to show the effects different battles had on the war and the changing zones of control.    There probably will be some challeneges however with this change though. It may be data intensive to process the switch, and i am not sure the effects this would have on markers. It probably will be a bit more challenging than just coding it to switch the background after a certain date is passed on the timeline.

The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! Linking maps to events is already possible:
  1. Make sure your maps have markers
  2. Create/edit an event and link it to a marker on the map you want to change to
Clicking on the event will now change the map and focus it on the chosen marker. Changing the map automatically as you scroll is currently not possible (as parallel events can have different maps and we have no way to tell which one you want to show), so we're declining this.

This is a great suggestion. In fact, when I first saw Chronicles as a feature, I thought for sure that this was one of the intended uses.   One work-around for the time being for any interested is using a pin/marker to signify an event, tie an event to it, and make sure that the pin/marker is on the map you'd like to advance forward to. As long as the player/viewer clicks the next event in the timeline it will pan/load to the map the pin/marker exists on.   Example: Event 1 -> Event 2 (pin/marker is on the second map in the chain) -> Event 3 (pin/marker is on the third map in the chain)   Inelegant, but it's what we have for now. I remember some video discussing this *specifically* for weather and seasons when Chronicle first debuted.

Isn't this just chronicles? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that is the whole purpose of that feature.
