What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
PCs and NPCs alike in RPG campaigns don't always stay active in a campaign but they still should be remembered.
Some RPGs have a high body count for PCs. Sometimes players leave, sometimes there are characters are retired without the character dying.
Sometimes NPCs are defeated but they still have a legacy. Commonly they are slain or imprisoned, but they can also be exiled or removed from power in another way.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
It allows various characters to leave the active setting without deleting them outright. That way, their legacy and memory remains.
What are other uses for this feature request?
This could potentially add some fun discussion as players can compare the "body counts" of their respective campaigns. A retired or imprisoned character can be returned to active status if necessary.
Follow up
Maybe "Exiled" would be useful too
