Would definitely be a boon. Currently I add a pic to the main vignette (which does have the bonus of adding to the hover-over preview), but having a consistent approach (that you can use or not use) would definitely help set the reader's expectations.
Whilst you can do this with BBcode and/or variables and custom css, anything on the templates can be ignored, so it doesn't matter for those who don't want it. My only stipulation would be if it's really diffiult and time consuming for the team there may be other more important things for them. If it's just redoing what they have done on other templates, no harm, no foul and I would probably pick and choose when I use it like i do with everythng lese. Plus, no everyone finds coding easy, and we want them to use WorldAnvil, it should just be for code nerds :P So don't shut people down peeps.
You can control the size and alignment of images via the bbcode tags and adding images to the sidebar is already possible too in the same way. In fact, the image tag gives you more control over the presentation than the portrait field. This feature would not add anything meaningful to the article templates.
Already more than possible. If you're having trouble sizing them - put them in the sidebar, they will be sized the same way as the templates you're talking about. This just bloats things, I feel.
I love this idea! I for one really like to draw so the ability to add drawings would be really useful
If it's put in the sidebar section, it doesn't get as large and has the same placement as the images for organizations etc have :)
I see the comments that there are other ways to add images, but why not increase ease of functionality?
I feel that people are concentrating too much on the fact that "you can already add images" through another method. Yes, it's true you can, but that isn't the point: If it was the point, then we might as well ask why the Character template bothers to have a dedicated space for adding images when you can "already add one" with code. Rather, the point is that any article about people, places, creatures, or things might benefit from an image if the creator has one to use, so why not offer a more direct way to add one? To me, it's similar to how the templates have world-building questions: You can skip answering them if you don't need to, but you might find it useful to read the questions to remind yourself of information to come up with and add to the page. Changing the other templates to allow for more obvious/simple image adding may remind someone to draw or find a public domain image to use when otherwise they might've forgotten or not bothered, even if there is already a way to put an image there with code. It would also be an entirely ignorable feature for those who only want to use text. Personally, I also agree with the user who said they often add an image in the exact spot where it would appear on the Character template anyway. I do the same, so I'd find it easier if it was built into the rest of the temlplates!
I actually often find myself adding an image exactly there anyway in articles where the template doesn't call for it, for the sake of unity across pages. Others I don't because I want a bigger image, but I don't think it would hurt for people who primarily use templates to have the option to always add an image.
I certainly think items and species would be much improved if there was an image portrait for those.
Is this referring to the images on the top of the content bar? I thought that was just the way the template was designed. I usually add images in the side content if i gotem but an automatic window would be nice i suppose
You can add images to most any article you want, in most any size you want (see the BBCode [img] tag options. If those options aren't enough, you can add a tag to the image, and that tag is added as a class to the HTML <img> tag, which allows it to be reference easily in custom CSS, so you can size and position the image, and otherwise modify it in countless ways. That said, there are times where being able to add and size images more easily would be handy.
I wonder how this could be used in similar ways - the character & organization templates have those for things like family trees, bloodlines, and organization charts. It could be interesting to see similar kinds of relationship charts make use of images in templates like a hierarchy of ranks/titles, or an evolutionary tree of a species.
I agree with Amancham, you can already add images to articles by copy and pasting the image's clipboard tag () in the sections tab.
Not necessary but would be nice to be able to see images as writing for inspiration.
Like mentioned before, you can add images as much as you like. Using the sidebar puts it at the same place as the portrait image from the character template. I'd rather have the ability to add images freely in the text to break up long articles and we already have that. I don't really see much benefit in adding a dedicated image field to all article types, since they aren't really pulled in as characters or organizations are. Might be wrong, but at this point, I don't see the benefit over using bbcode and adding my own images.
While you can add images wherever you want in an article using the clipboard option, it would be nice to have a dedicated portrait slot for other articles as well.
Good news. You CAN add images to all article types (I am a big fan of illustrating all things myself). The only "limitation" is the lack of the fixed slot which is provided for portraits, but this can easily be simulated for other article types using the sidebar (for example). I only recently realised you can start with a square bracket in text and bring up an inline insert tool that easily lets you select named images (or you add the image then select it to "copy" and "paste" from the image list after uploading it). With BBCode you can selectively size images, align them and allocate to columns, giving very good control over the way they look in your article. A trick I also like to use is the full width footer where you can have images at the end of the article spanning the whole page and every article type can have a unique image header, overriding your world default. I think if you explore the help you'll find you can do what you want already, and more, since you can lavishly illustrate articles with many images, should you wish to do so.
For stuff like myths and geography, a fixed 'portrait' image doesn't sound like a good fit. Just freely inserting images would be far more logical there, and you can already do that.
