“The universe is conspiring against me!” Wordler 377 shouted. “The Word I need is being deliberately hidden by the forces of time and fate! This quest is impossible! I will never—ooh, lunch!”
He pulled the rental car into the parking lot of Bob’s Burritos. “Maybe a little break is just what I need to reset my luck.”
Once inside, 377 gave his lunch order from the ingredients listed on the menu. “Chicken burrito with rice, cheese, jalapenos, salsa, mushrooms, black beans—”
“We’re out of black beans,” said the server. “All we have are those light brown beans with the speckles on them.”
“Ugh. This day just keeps getting worse and worse.” The irate Wordler stomped around until his burrito was ready, then marched out the door with it in a bag. He was so intent on how the world was stacked against him that he almost collided with a rider on horseback in the parking lot.
“Hey, watch where you’re going!”
“Sorry,” said the rider. “My mottle-patterned horse and I had some errands in town, and we were just taking a shortcut through the lot.”
“The nerve of some people,” said 377, continuing onward to his rental car. It was easy to find. 377 had paid extra for the privilege of driving a classic car from the 1970s, but instead he’d gotten this dull brown subcompact in need of a new muffler. “It’s not even the Mercury Bobcat they told me it would be, but the common Ford version. Ugh.”
He got into the 1970s Ford subcompact, pulled around the mottled horse, and resumed his journey down the highway with a big bite of tan-colored beans. “The universe is conspiring against me! The Word I need is being deliberately hidden by the forces of time and fate! I feel like I’m further from it now than ever!”
