“I still can’t believe you went to the Ends of the Earth,” said Samantha.
“One of the Ends,” said her friend, the recently dubbed Wordler 376.
“I can’t believe you met the Man at the End of the World.”
“He was nice,” 376 told her. “Much nicer than his administrative assistant.”
“And most of all, I can’t believe you brought back these adorable bunnies.” Samantha stroked the fur of her favorite of the group, a lop-eared ball of white with black splotches.
“I brought back the HUTCH,” said 376. “But a hutch isn’t a HUTCH unless it has rabbits in it, so I had to take a few of those as well.”
“That’s what I’ll do too,” Samantha affirmed. “For my quest, I’ll bring back a whole bunch of cute baby animals.”
376 shook her head. “That’s not really how the quest is supposed to work. You’ll be looking for a very particular five-letter Word—”
“The Word may have something to do with baby animals,” said Samantha. “There’s no way to know until I try, right?”
“I guess,” said 376 doubtfully.
On her day as Wordler 378, Samantha returned to the village with baby groundhogs, baby elephants, baby porcupines, and kept coming back with more immature animals until she could have started a baby zoo.
“This infantile menagerie of animals will all have to go back to the wilds where you found them,” said the QUEEN.
“You could transport them in an ark,” 376 suggested.
“Could I?” asked 378.
“No, that was a joke.”
The QUEEN cleared her throat. “We hate to rush you, but the day is coming to a close and the village is still in need of today’s Word.”
“One more trip,” said 378. “A Wordler on a quest needs to trust her feelings, and I have a feeling that I’m on the right track. It’s a bird. A very specific species of bird. And when I find it, I will have my Word.”
And so, she set off for her final and ultimately successful trip.
