Day 359: DONOR

217 0 0

359 days after a wizard cursed the REALM…

Current Version:

Wordler 359 headed to the big city, where bustling crowds of people were sure to have lots of words at their disposal. “Sir? Could I trouble you for a Word of Power? Ma’am? I’m looking for a word to save my village. Sir? Ma’am? Sir?”

“Oh, you poor dear,” said a woman in a fur-trimmed coat. “Tired, hungry, downtrodden. No doubt you’re freshly arrived from some armpit of the world without a penny to your name.”

“Wordler Village is hardly an armpit,” 359 huffed. “We are blessed by beautiful surroundings and abundant natural resources. Our main problem is that our village has been cursed by evil forces, which can only be kept away by a specific Words of Power—"

“I want to help,” the woman interrupted. “And lucky for you, I run a small foundation.”

“Foundation.” 359 considered the word. “It’s very kind of you, but I don’t think it’s what I’m looking for. So far, the Words of Power have all had exactly five letters.”

“I know,” said the woman. “We’ll hold a telethon!”

“Telethon. That’s also too many letters.” But despite her protests, 359 soon found herself in a television studio, standing between a volunteer phonebank and a troupe of acrobats.

The foundation woman beamed. “The phone lines are flashing and the number we’re raising just keeps going up and up and up! You must be delighted, my dear.”

“I’ve already been assigned a number,” said 359. “What I’m looking for is a word.”

“The word is MONEY, darling.”

“MONEY. Wordler 337 brought that one back already. And Wordler 341 brought us ASSET. But I’m actually looking for something else. I’m sorry for wasting your time.” She left the studio despondent and returned to the street.

A man ran up to her. “Hey, aren’t you that Wordler girl from the TV? Are you still looking for your word?”

359 nodded. She was no closer to finding her word than I was before. The only thing that the telethon had done was to make her infamous across the city.

“I think I have what you’re looking for. My grandparents came here from Wordler Village back in the 60s, and we kept a few heirloom words. I have no use for this one, but if it helps the Village, it’s yours.”

359 looked at the word and gasped. It was exactly what she was looking for.
