Day 379: LILAC

224 0 0

379 days after a wizard cursed the REALM…

Current Version:

“Hey, Joe!”

The Wordler removed his earbuds and dialed down the intensity of his treadmill. Around them, the fitness center was a buzz of activity. “Can I help you?”

“Listen, Joe—”

“I’m Wordler 375 now. Or just 375 for short. What can I do for you, Blue?”

“I’m Wordler 379 now,” the other man started, but 375 cut him off.

“Not until the ceremony.”

Blue sighed. “Okay, okay. But about that. Can I borrow your shirt? The red Hawaiian shirt with the white flowers?”

“Dude, that’s my lucky shirt.”

“Exactly, and just look at the luck it brought you. Not to mention the coolness factor. That word you brought back? GAWKY? That’s something you overcame, and this is the shirt that made it happen.”

“It wasn’t the shirt that did all those chin-ups.”

“The ladies dig the shirt, my man.”

375 dialed up the pace of his treadmill jog. “Oh yeah? What have you heard?”

“I overheard Wordler 354 talking about you with her friends. Lend me the shirt and I’ll give you all the deets.”

“354 huh?”

“Yeah. You know her?”

“I’ve seen her around. You really think she’s into me?”

“I only know what I’ve heard.”

“All right, Blue. I’ll give you the shirt off my back. Wear it on your quest, but be sure to get it back to me in the same condition I’m lending it in.”

“You’ve got a deal.”

Later that morning, Wordler 379 wore the lucky shirt while receiving his mission from the QUEEN. The crowd cheered, he set out, and was immediately stopped by an irate Wordler 375.

“Hey, Joe. Um. 375. Listen, thanks again for lending me—”

“You smell like flowers,” said 375.

“Err—thank you?” said 379.

“My shirt. My lucky shirt. Smells like flowers.”

“Oh!” 379 laughed. “Oh, that. When I washed it, I used this awesome fabric softener. This stuff kicks butt, man. It costs a little more, but totally worth it. Right?”

“When you washed it?” 375 pulled at his hair. “Dude, have you not ever had a lucky shirt? <em>You’re not supposed to wash it!
