“Who?”
“Her.”
The other Wordlers stepped aside to create a path for the day’s champion, the newly appointed Wordler 360. For many, the choice was a shocking disappointment, and as she passed, they muttered disparagements.
“Self-absorbed.”
“Irresponsible.”
“Unreliable.”
“Why couldn’t the QUEEN have chosen someone else, anyone else than her?”
“Hey guys?” said 360. “You know I can hear you, right?”
“Don’t blow this,” said Wordler 359, who had brought back the word DONOR from the big city just the day before. “The search for a new magic word isn’t like all the chores you always avoid. This is important. Lives are at stake.”
360 looked down at her shoes. “I know I’ve let everyone down in the past. I know I’m not as dedicated or skilled as the rest of you. But I’m going to do good this time. I’m going to make up for everything I’ve ever done wrong. You’ll see.”
“We’d better,” said Wordler 357, as she stroked the feathers of her GOOSE.
The quest was a struggle. Many times, 360 was tempted to give up, but she had something to prove to the others, and that gave her the focus she needed to return with just the right word.
