The crows circled, hurling their demonic taunt, “Not laughter, not an origin, not laughter, not an origin…”
“Not MIRTH, and not BIRTH,” mused Wordler 355. “Not MIRTH, and not BIRTH, so it must be…GIRTH!”
And with that epiphany, the wide-eyed Wordler escaped the Rhyme Zone forest with a hard-won word that could protect the Wordler lands. Each magic word was supposed to keep the darkness at bay for an entire day, yet somehow the evil crows returned that night to haunt 355’s dreams.
“Not laughter, not an origin, not laughter, not an origin…”
“GIRTH, GIRTH, I told you it’s GIRTH!” 355 shouted, waking with a start from her terrible nightmare.
“That was yesterday,” her roommate yawned. “Go back to bed, hero. Some of us still need our sleep.”
355 pulled the covers over her head. “It wasn’t strong enough.”
“What wasn’t?”
“The word I found, GIRTH, it wasn’t enough to keep away bad dreams. I need something stronger.”
“It’s my turn to quest tomorrow. Let’s pray that I find something that can help you.”
355 snickered. She’d never been the religious sort. But upon closing her eyes and seeing the crows again, she reconsidered, at least in her own way. “I hope you find it, amen.”
Every morning, a Wordler is chosen to undertake a quest for one magic word that will protect their village for another day. The next morning was no exception. Bright and early, 355’s roommate took up the questing staff and became Wordler 356. At the edge of the village, she called back over her shoulder to her friend, “I’ll be back before noon with a new magic word, and an antidote to your nightmares.”
“Amen,” 355 replied.
True to her word, 356 returned with the new word that was a revelation to all. Even 355 had a peaceful sleep that night, confident that dark forces would not be able to return, for at least another day…
